Hike, Bike & Climb...
your way to the top!
Hiking and biking are invigorating and enjoyable ways to
do some spectacular sightseeing in the Central Cariboo. The
miles and miles of well-traveled trails that surround the City of
Williams Lake take bikers on exhilarating rides through forests,
down gullies, and into long grassy plains. The pleasantly scenic
and easy going 12 km River Valley Trail is a must! It follows
the Williams Lake River all the way from the City of Williams
Lake to the magnifi cent Fraser River through sharp canyon
walls and meandering creek beds. Most trails, including this
one, accommodate people on foot, bikes, horseback, or cross-
country skis and snowshoes in the winter. For a more elevating
experience, try one of the well-traveled trails on Fox Mountain
or the West Side.
The biking season in Williams Lake extends from May to the
end of October with the die-hards riding year round, with
or without snow. A dedicated and enthusiastic local riding
group built the trail network, and the trails range from mellow
forest to technical gullies. The varied terrain provides riding
for those interested in cross-country, uphill, or exhilarating
downhill biking.
Some great destinations for day hikes include Cameron
Ridge
with spectacular views of Quesnel Lake, Brown Top
Mountain,
and Eureka Peak within the Horsefl y and Likely
areas. To the west of Williams Lake, the Junction Sheep Range
offers fantastic day hiking. With so much backcountry terrain,
there is really no limit to places that you can hike, it all just
depends how remote you wish to get!
You may be surprised to hear that Rock Climbing has several
well-developed locations in the Williams Lake area with
impressive limestone routes that include Esler Bluffs, Moon
Road Bluff,
and Alkali Bluffs. For more information on these
routes please contact the local outdoors shop, Red Shreds Bike
& Board Shed at (250) 398-7873.
Most local trails are signed and mapped for ease of navigation.
Maps can be viewed online at visitcariboo.com or picked up at Red
Shreds Bike and Board Shed
and the Tourism Discovery Centre.
