With hundreds of lakes, multiple rivers, and countless
streams, the Central Cariboo provides any fi shing enthusiast
with seemingly infi nite opportunities for an unsurpassed
fi shing adventure! The Central Cariboo's world-renowned
fi shing offers some of the fi nest freshwater fi shing in North
America. With the diverse range of fi shing opportunities
including fl y-fi shing, angling, trolling, or ice fi shing... you are
sure to fi nd what you're looking for here! The many fantastic
destinations in the area include Quesnel Lake, one of the
deepest fjord lakes in the world and home to many species of
fi sh including 25 pound trophy rainbow trout. In Quesnel Lake
you'll also fi nd an abundance of Chinook and Sockeye Salmon
who make their way through the Quesnel and Fraser Rivers,
en route to their spawning grounds. Another great destination
is Horsefl y Lake which has substantial populations of rainbow
trout, kokanee salmon, and lake trout. Also unique to the area
is the Horsefl y River which boasts the second largest sockeye
salmon run in BC.
Spend some time fi shing at one of many convenient
local hotspots, or charter a fl oatplane to a more
secluded location.Various campsites, hotels, and
motels are available for longer excursions... or you
can choose to stay at one of the luxury resorts and
lodges in the area. There are a number of professional
guides for hire to lead you to optimal locations and
share their knowledge with you, enhancing both your
fi shing skills and your overall experience.
Whether you are out searching, or just enjoying the
wilderness, the local wildlife viewing opportunities will
leave you in awe. The Central Cariboo is home to grizzly
and black bears, mule deer, moose, mink, and caribou
(seen in the Cariboo Mountains Park) not to mention
the much sought after California Big Horn Sheep (seen
mainly in the Junction Sheep Range area). Partaking in an
eco-tour can get you a close view of many of these native
species. For those more interested in birds, over 200
hundred species can be found at Scout Island in Williams Lake.
Among the more common geese and ducks, you may also see
a few rarer species like Trumpeter Swans and American White
Pelicans. The Island houses a nature centre which is a great
educational destination to learn about the local wildlife, fl ora
and fauna, and provides an interactive stop for your family.
