Winning Xats'ull Heritage Village community of Xats'ull, a reconstructed heritage village on the banks of the Fraser River offering camping and cultural activities. Soda Creek is a rural community with a wealth of First Nations and gold rush history making it a truly unique place to visit. construction to keep up with the growing demands for transportation of thousands of miners and supplies to the gold fi elds in Barkerville. Incomplete in 1863, the road came to a stop in Soda Creek, which became an ideal sternwheeler steamer terminus. It was the only way to complete the journey north to Quesnel on the Fraser River, so miners could then make their way east to Barkerville. It soon became a bustling boomtown with saloons, blacksmith shops, hotels and stores. In 1869, upon completion of the Cariboo Wagon Road from Lillooet to Quesnel, Soda Creek was all but deserted until its second boom which began in 1909. and openly celebrated. The Xats'ull First Nations people invite visitors to experience their spiritual and cultural traditions. Recreational Paradise en route to the Alaska Highway, is a popular outdoor recreation destination with fantastic vacationing opportunities. Located on Cariboo Highway 97, 44 kms north of Williams Lake, it is ideal for water-sport activities such as canoeing, fi shing, kayaking, water-skiing, swimming and boating. Excellent fi shing for rainbow trout and kokanee salmon await and if you visit during the month of September, you can delight in viewing thousands of spawning kokanee in Sheridan Creek. The community also hosts the very popular McLeese Lake Annual Fishing Derby during the long weekend in May. |
