Soda Creek
Home of the National Award-
Winning Xats'ull Heritage Village
Heading north, travel to Soda Creek, home to the historic
community of Xats'ull, a reconstructed heritage village on the
banks of the Fraser River offering camping and cultural activities.
Soda Creek is a rural community with a wealth of First Nations and
gold rush history making it a truly unique place to visit.
In the early 1860s, the Cariboo Wagon Road was under
construction to keep up with the growing demands for
transportation of thousands of miners and supplies to the gold
fi elds in Barkerville. Incomplete in 1863, the road came to a stop
in Soda Creek, which became an ideal sternwheeler steamer
terminus. It was the only way to complete the journey north
to Quesnel on the Fraser River, so miners could then make
their way east to Barkerville. It soon became a bustling
boomtown with saloons, blacksmith shops, hotels and
stores. In 1869, upon completion of the Cariboo Wagon
Road from Lillooet to Quesnel, Soda Creek was all but
deserted until its second boom which began in 1909.
Today, its First Nation's legacy is easily accessible
and openly celebrated. The Xats'ull First Nations
people invite visitors to experience their spiritual
and cultural traditions.
